SSC Database Backup
Small System (Option 11) software is stored in various areas of the NTDK20 Small System Controller (SSC) card.
- DRAM - active data. Data from the primary flash drive (C:) overwrites the data in DRAM during a SYSLOAD (system reload).
- Primary flash drive (C:) - contains two copies of customer records, primary and backup records.
- Backup flash drive (Z:) - retains the true backup copy of the customer database
- PC Card device (A: or B:) - allows a complete copy of the customer database to be stored on a removable PC Card.
The following table summarizes the four backup methods and overlays and the commands to initiate them.
Method | Overlay | Command | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Datadump | LD 43 | EDD |
Data in DRAM is written to the primary and backup flash drives (C: and Z:). Note: This type of backup should be performed on a regular basis and after all changes. |
Backup | LD 43 | BKO |
Data in the primary flash drive is copied to the PC Card device (drive B:). |
Archive | LD 143 | UPGRADE (Utilities Menu) |
Data is copied to the PC Card device in a format organised by the user (drive A:). Note: this is the recommended method of backing up customer data in parallel with datadumps. |
CCBR | LD 143 | XBK |
Data is copied to the remote PC or computer disk. (XMODEM) |
Archive Database and Remote Backup/Restore are covered elsewhere in this section.
The following procedures should be performed regularly.
EDD Command (LD 43):
The EDD command copies customer data from DRAM to the primary and backup flash drives
(C: and Z:).
An equipment datadump (EDD) is automatically performed during the Daily Routines, but it should also be manually
invoked on a regular basis and after all programming changes. Any changes made after the last EDD will be lost if there's a sudden power failure.
Procedure:
- Login, type LD 43, press <cr>
- Type EDD, press <cr>
- After DATA DUMP COMPLETE, type four stars (****) to exit LD 43
It can take up to 5 mins to complete the datadump, depending on the size of the database.
BKO Command (LD 43):
The BKO command copies customer data from the primary flash drive to a PC Card. The backed up database can subsequently be used to restore customer data from an external drive (by using Restore Utilities in LD 143). This procedure is a monthly routine.
A PC Card (PCMCIA) Flashdisk (or compact flash card with PCMCIA adapter) is required for this procedure. Note: Cards with capacities greater than 64 Meg are NOT supported. A 32 Meg Compact Flash with PCMCIA adapter is suitable for back-ups.
Procedure:
- Insert a PC Card Flaskdisk in the SCC card PCMCIA slot B (right side).
- Login, type LD 43, press <cr>
- Type EDD, press <cr>
This is to ensure the latest configuration is saved to the primary flash drive before you backup. - Type BKO
This will copy the contents of the primary flash drive (C:) to the PC Card (B:) - After DATA DUMP COMPLETE, exit the overlay. Type four stars (****) to exit LD 43 and remove the PC Card.
It can take upto 5 mins to complete the datadump, depending on the size of the database. The PC Card should be stored safely!
XBK Command (LD 143):
The XBK command (Remote Backup) copies the customer data from the primary flash drive of the Option 11C system onto a computer using the XMODEM-CRC protocol. The backup can subsequently be used to restore customer data with XRT (Remote Restore), also in LD 143.
Procedure:
- Login, type LD 143, press <cr>
- Type XBK, press <cr>
- Choose 'Receive File' from HyperTerminal's 'Transfer' drop down menu.
- Enter a meaningful filename, and make sure that XMODEM is selected as the protocol.
- Click 'Receive'. After a short pause, a progress bar will start and the file will download.
It can take upto 5 mins to complete the transfer, depending on the size of the database.
